Tribute to one of my ancestors

Nellie Theresa CONNOR (xx/7/1855-22/7/1913)Nellie Theresa Connor Memorialmemorial

Nellie Theresa CONNOR (foreman had been a factory employee of the Binghamton Clothing Company for 31 years and was considered a mother figure by many young workers) died heroically on 22/7/1913 trying to save others from the fire of the factory :
When the alarm sounded, she was one of the first to reach the door and security. Behind her, dozens of women hesitated to rush up the smoky staircase. “Hurry up, girls! It's okay if you hurry,” Nellie shouted before stepping aside to let the women pass her, “tapping in a steady beat” to get the women moving. She died with 30 other people (out of a hundred) in the collapse of the building that came after only 20 minutes.

Another employee, foreman Sidney DIMMOCK (an employee for 16 years), one of the oldest in the factory like Nellie, was equally heroic in his efforts to save lives and encouraged the women to escape. He personally carried two women to safety, but was never seen again after entering the building a third time.
