Tribute to one of my ancestors

Nellie Theresa O'Connor Nellie Theresa O'Connor

Nellie Theresa O'Connor (foreman had been a factory employee for 31 years and was considered a mother figure by many young workers) died heroically on 22/7/1913 trying to save others from the fire from the Binghamton Clothing Company:
When the alarm sounded, she was one of the first to reach the door and security. Behind her, dozens of people hesitated to rush up the smoky staircase. “Hurry up, girls! It's okay if you hurry,” Nellie shouted before stepping aside to let the women pass her, “tapping in a steady beat” to get the women moving. She died along with 30 other people in the building collapse.

Another employee, foreman Sidney Dimmock (an employee for 18 years), one of the oldest in the factory like Nellie, was equally heroic in his efforts to save lives and encouraged the women to escape. He personally carried two women to safety, but was never seen again after entering the building a third time.
